I was a bit surprised by so many of my friends updating their facebook status last night to let everyone know that they'd be tuning in to the Royal Wedding. I must admit I'd know nothing about it had I not spent the last week in the hospital surrounded by cable TVs and magazines. And, perhaps I would care a little bit more if I didn't have a new bundle of joy to distract me from current events. (What, did someone say there was a horrible tornado?) But this morning I got to thinking...maybe we were created to care about this wedding ceremony? Perhaps there's something deep within us all that makes us long for an invitation to THE royal wedding?
6 Then I heard what sounded like a great multitude, like the roar of rushing waters and like loud peals of thunder, shouting:
“Hallelujah!
For our Lord God Almighty reigns.
7 Let us rejoice and be glad
and give him glory!
For the wedding of the Lamb has come,
and his bride has made herself ready.
8 Fine linen, bright and clean,
was given her to wear.”
(Fine linen stands for the righteous acts of God’s holy people.)
9 Then the angel said to me, “Write this: Blessed are those who are invited to the wedding supper of the Lamb!” And he added, “These are the true words of God.”
10 At this I fell at his feet to worship him. But he said to me, “Don’t do that! I am a fellow servant with you and with your brothers and sisters who hold to the testimony of Jesus. Worship God! For it is the Spirit of prophecy who bears testimony to Jesus.” (Revelation 19:6-10)
I've been to quite a few wedding celebrations in my day (my parents used to be in the 'wedding business.) I've seen and, with my sister's help and an endless budget, could probably throw quite a party. Yet in my heart I know that nothing on Earth could compare with what's to come for those who make up the Bride of Christ. John Piper has some good thoughts on the topic. Will you be on the guest list?
