Differently the Same

I watch him reach for his daddy's hand
run through the grassy field
chase his sister
and laugh
and I shun all the times I've wished for them older
somewhere in the middle of Indiana
where my old and new lives cross paths
I pray to God that moments like these could last

I hear baby sister cry inconsolably
so ready to be home
and I can't switch it off or leave it alone
so I turn away from this perfect picture day
shifting gears once again
toss the camera aside
I search for that silence I can get lost in
and trade it
not for the cries and tears
but for milk and a gentle song
knowing all along
that her hunger is real
but her longing is so much more than this
or anything I can give

we pack up with kicking and screaming
push toddlers into car seat molds
and hope
that by the next mile marker
the journey will seem more worthwhile
we hit our magic sound-proof glass button
and smile
and I see You in every little detail
I know You are the Author of these days
come what may You will bring us home
much differently the same
